چکیده

We point out that the traditional notion of test statistic is too narrow, and we propose a natural generalization that is arguably maximal. The study is restricted to simple statistical hypotheses. An older version of this paper is published as an arXiv technical report: https: //arxiv.org/abs/1702.02590.

Explorations in statistics: hypothesis tests and P values.

Learning about statistics is a lot like learning about science: the learning is more meaningful if you can actively explore. This second installment of Explorations in Statistics delves into test statistics and P values, two concepts fundamental to the test of a scientific null hypothesis. The essence of a test statistic is that it compares what we observe in the experiment to what we expect to...

Estimating p-values in small microarray experiments

MOTIVATION Microarray data typically have small numbers of observations per gene, which can result in low power for statistical tests. Test statistics that borrow information from data across all of the genes can improve power, but these statistics have non-standard distributions, and their significance must be assessed using permutation analysis. When sample sizes are small, the number of dist...

Trimmed weighted Simes' test for two one-sided hypotheses with arbitrarily correlated test statistics.

The two-sided Simes test is known to control the type I error rate with bivariate normal test statistics. For one-sided hypotheses, control of the type I error rate requires that the correlation between the bivariate normal test statistics is non-negative. In this article, we introduce a trimmed version of the one-sided weighted Simes test for two hypotheses which rejects if (i) the one-sided w...

A Comparison of Two Classes of Methods for Estimating False Discovery Rates in Microarray Studies

The goal of many microarray studies is to identify genes that are differentially expressed between two classes or populations. Many data analysts choose to estimate the false discovery rate (FDR) associated with the list of genes declared differentially expressed. Estimating an FDR largely reduces to estimating π 1, the proportion of differentially expressed genes among all analyzed genes. Esti...

Improved likelihood inference in Birnbaum-Saunders regressions

The Birnbaum–Saunders regression model is commonly used in reliability studies. We address the issue of performing inference in this class of models when the number of observations is small. Our simulation results suggest that the likelihood ratio test tends to be liberal when the sample size is small. We obtain a correction factor which reduces the size distortion of the test. Also, we conside...
